AT AYAAN'S HOUSE:ย
ย In the dimly lit living room, sits Ayaan his mind clouded with the weight of memories that refused to fade.ย His eyes were distant as his mother continued to speak, her voice trembling with concern.ย
ย "Ayaan, please," she pleaded softly, her hands clasped in front of her. "You've suffered enough. It's time to move on. I know it's hard, but you need to think about your future. At least do this for your own good. Do it for us."
ย Ayaan's gaze softened for a moment, his expression unreadable. His lips parted to speak, but the words caught in his throat. looking at his mother's tear-filled eyes, a pang of guilt twisted in his chest. He wanted to say something, anything to ease her worries, but how could he? He had lost everything once before. He couldn't risk it again.
ย His father, sitting across from them, had remained silent throughout the exchange, his brow furrowed in frustration. The quiet tension in the air was thick, but then, just as Ayaan was about to respond, his father's voice broke through. "You think this is living?" his father finally spat, his voice low but seething. "You're letting your grief turn you into a ghost in your own home. We've tried to help youโ"
Ayaan's hand balled into a fist at his side. He didn't want to hear this. Not now. Not ever.
"And now you're doing this to your mother?" his father continued, standing now, looming over Ayaan, his anger barely contained. "You owe her more than this. This is for your future, Ayaan!" His father's words were sharp, full of raw emotion. "Stop letting your past dictate your life. Don't let it hold you back. It's time to move forward."Ayaan's chest tightened, and for a moment, he could feel the anger rising within him.ย
His mother, always the mediator, stepped between them, her voice quivering with desperation. "Please, both of you... this isn't helping. Ayaan, I know you're in pain. But we're losing you. I can't bear to watch you disappear in front of us."
He was just about to snap when his mother, noticing the storm brewing in his eyes, gently cupped his face in her hands. Her touch was soft, tender, and it made his heart ache in ways he didn't understand.ย
"Ayaan," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion, "your father only wants what's best for you. We both do. I know you're hurting, and I can't imagine how much, but you can't live like this forever. Life doesn't stop, and we don't want to lose you to your memories."
ย Her thumb gently stroked his cheek, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Ayaan's resolve wavered. Seeing his mother like this, so vulnerable, so desperate, tore at the last bit of defiance he had left. He didn't want to disappoint her, to be the cause of her pain. The memories of the past still gripped him tightly, but the love he held for his mother weighed heavier in that moment.ย
ย He exhaled slowly, the anger fading into a deep sense of resignation. His eyes softened as he looked at her, though his voice remained steady, almost cold. "Fine, mom. Just for you. I'll do it."
ย His mother's face lit up with relief, though her tears still fell. She held him close, whispering her thanks and praying that this step would bring her son some peace. But deep inside, Ayaan felt nothing but the quiet ache of a heart that had been shattered long ago.
ย As his mother's embrace tightened, Ayaan knew this decision wasn't for himself, not really. It was for her, for his family. But as for his own happinessโhe wasn't sure he could ever feel that again.

ENGAGEMENET DAYย
ISHA'S HOUSE:
The house buzzed with energyโlaughter, chatter, the clinking of dishes, and the sound of last-minute wedding arrangements all blended into a lively symphony. Isha could hear her family outside in the hall, everyone rushing around to make sure everything was perfect for her engagement ceremony. But inside her room, it was a different kind of hustle.
ย Riya, her best friend and partner-in-crime, was busy applying the finishing touches to Isha's makeup. "Hold still, will you?" Riya laughed, but Isha, ever the restless one, couldn't help but fidget.ย
ย "I can't help it!" Isha protested with a playful grin, twirling a strand of her hair as she spoke. "I feel like I've been sitting here forever. Besides, it's just makeup, Riya, not rocket science."ย
ย "Yeah, well, you want to look perfect for Mr. Cold Ice, don't you?" Riya teased, arching an eyebrow.ย
Isha's laughter rang out, light and infectious. "Ayaan isn't that bad. He's just... reserved." She tried to downplay it, but even she knew Ayaan was a bit of a mystery. They'd only met a couple of times, and each time, his conversation had been short, polite, and distantโlike he was fulfilling a duty more than anything else.ย
ย Still, there was something about him that had caught her attention. Maybe it was his calm, serious demeanor that intrigued her, or maybe it was just the way he looked when he wasn't trying. Either way, despite his coldness, Isha had felt drawn to him from the moment they met.
ย Riya's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Reserved? That's a generous word. The guy barely cracked a smile when you two met. Are you sure you're not worried about having to break through that ice barrier?"
ย Isha smiled softly, shrugging. "I don't know... There's something about him. He's different from all the loud, overconfident guys we usually meet. He's quiet, but I like that. I think... I think I can get him to open up."ย
ย Riya rolled her eyes, brushing the last bit of blush on Isha's cheeks. "That's because you're always so optimistic. But be careful, Ish. He's not the easygoing type like you."
ย Isha waved her hand dismissively, standing up and adjusting her flowing lehenga, her energy lighting up the room. "I like a challenge, Ri. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? We'll be married in a few days, and who knows? Maybe he'll surprise me."
ย Riya snorted, helping Isha with her jewelry. "Yeah, sure, he'll surprise you. Just don't be too surprised when he doesn't laugh at your jokes."ย
ย Isha shot her a playful glare. "Oh, please! Everyone laughs at my jokes. I'll crack that serious exterior of his sooner or later."Despite her playful words, Isha felt a tiny knot of uncertainty deep down. She had fallen for Ayaan quickly, almost without realizing it, and the engagement had been arranged so fast that she hardly had time to process it. But Ayaan... he was hard to read. He had agreed to the marriage, but it was clear he wasn't as invested emotionally. She didn't know why, but something about him felt... distant. Like his mind was somewhere else.
She shook off the thought. Today wasn't the day for doubts. It was her engagement day, and she was determined to enjoy every moment of it. She was sure that, in time, Ayaan would come around.ย
ย Outside, the noise of excited relatives calling her name grew louder. Isha's mother was probably pacing, anxious about getting everything in order, and her father was likely busy greeting the guests. The entire house was in full celebration mode.
ย "Alright, enough daydreaming," Riya said, standing up with a satisfied smile. "You're ready. You look gorgeous, as always."ย
ย Isha twirled in front of the mirror, the red and gold of her lehenga catching the light. "Gorgeous? I look like a queen!" She winked at her reflection and gave a little laugh. "Do you think Ayaan will at least smile when he sees me?"
ย Riya crossed her arms and smirked. "If he doesn't, I'll drag him out by the collar and make him."Isha giggled and grabbed Riya's arm. "Okay, let's go before you actually do something crazy."
ย With that, the two of them stepped out of the room, into the whirlwind of family, friends, and celebrations. Isha's heart raced, not just because of the excitement, but because somewhere in that crowd, Ayaan was waiting. Serious, cold, and distantโbut hers, nonetheless.
As Isha walked down the stairs, their eyes met. Her heart fluttered, hoping for something in his gazeโanything. But Ayaan's expression remained distant, his emotions locked away behind the pain of his past. The engagement was just beginning, but already, the distance between them seemed vast.
